ENMG – Frequently asked questions

When is an ENMG examination useful?

The examination is helpful when a nerve or muscle disorder is suspected. It should be performed no earlier than three weeks after the onset of the injury (e.g., after a nerve injury), so that the findings can be detected.ga.

Does the examination hurt?

The electrical stimuli may feel like small pinches, and the needle examination may cause slight tingling. The examination can feel uncomfortable, but it is usually not truly painful.

How long does the examination take?

The duration varies, typically about 20–40 minutes.

Do I need to prepare for the examination?

Avoid applying creams or lotions to the skin on the day of the examination, as they may interfere with the measurements. Your limbs should be warm, so dress warmly on cool days. You may eat and drink normally.

Can I take my medication as usual?

Yes, you may take your medication normally unless your doctor has instructed otherwise.

Can I come to the exam if I have a cold?

A mild cold usually does not prevent the examination. If you have a fever, please contact Neurolaboratorio.

I have a pacemaker. Can the examination be done?

Yes, ENMG can be performed on patients with a pacemaker. However, it is important to inform the examining doctor about the pacemaker.

Can I bring a support person with me?

Yes, you may bring a support person if you feel their presence would be helpful during the examination.

Is anesthesia needed?

No anesthesia is used, as the procedure is short and any discomfort is mild.

Can there be pain after the examination?

You may experience mild muscle soreness or slight tenderness at the needle insertion sites afterward. These sensations usually disappear within a day. You may resume normal activities after the examination. Pain medication can be taken if needed.

Can the examination worsen my symptoms?

The examination does not worsen the condition. Any after-sensations are temporary.

Can I exercise after the examination?

Can I drive after the examination?

Yes, you can drive normally after the examination.

When will I receive the results?
